بیماری حاد کلیوی را اکنون آسیب حاد کلیوی (Acute Kidney Injury) یا (AKI) نامیده که مشخصه آن، کاهش ناگهانی عملکرد کلیوی به مدت بیش از هفت روز می باشد. در حدود یک نفر از هشت امریکایی (براساس آمار سال 2007 میلادی) دچار بیماری مزمن کلیویست، نرخی که در طی زمان در حال افزایش است.

Oliguria
The otherwise healthy neonate is oliguric for the first 2–3 days of life until the onset of the postnatal diuresis.
Ninety-two percent of neonates will pass urine within the first 24 h of life , and almost all newborns will do so in the first 48 h .
Beyond the immediate neonatal period , oliguria is defined as urine output of
less than 500 ml/24 h/1.73 m2 , which is sufficient to maintain homeostasis.
The most common cause of oliguria in children is intravascular volume depletion .

Children with AKI from hypoxic/ischemic insults and acute glomerulonephritis are more likely to have oliguria or anuria.
children with aminoglycoside drug toxicity, contrast-induced nephropathy, or acute interstitial nephritis are more likely to have normal or increased urine output.
